The role of animals in the grapes of wrath is really important, I think.
It is a really good way to incorporate morals into the text but without stating them right out. This kind of gives a little leeway so other can form their own ideas about the morals.
Example.... "I think the turtle in this story represents...."
"Yes, but I also think that it shows....."
Coming back to the class discussion that we had the other day about the turtle, the turtle really represents big man and little man. It also shows strength, persistence, hope, never giving up, and maybe a dose of stubbornness when it was placed under the house but came right back out a second later and was headed South West.
